Movie Review : Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire starts with this scene that goes back and forth between the police station and the studio set of who wants to be a millionaire. The main character of this movie is an indian Moslem with the name of Jamal Malik, he is a kid who was a victim of religious act of violence against Moslem. He, who is already poor, lost everything that he had in that act of violence. Jamal with his brother, Salim, and a girl who was also a victim of the riot, Latika, than starts their journey to survive. And years later, he got feature on this TV show called Who Wants to be a Millionaire. And then, the story will go back and forth between the TV show and Jamal’s life experience.

This movie, in my opinion, is about life, spirit and love. The story tells you of how harsh the world can be, but they never seem to bother and fight on. The story is about how someone can make the best of their miserable life, how they turn lemons into lemonade. The spirit of Jamal in this movie are truly admirable and we are all have to realize how lucky we are with what we have right now. Because I am sure many people are suffering like they do as we speak. The story is also about the love connection between Jamal and Latika, how Jamal would risk his life just to see her again and rescue her. But, for me, the movie is more about telling the harsh life conditions and spirit to keep fighting. The love story is just a way to make this movie more commercial.

Another thing that make me so interested in this movie, is because I have been to India. And the condition in India is very harsh indeed. I mean, the beggars are everywhere. My tour guide told me stories of how homeless people would freeze to dead on the street in winter and how the government would only send trucks to collect their bodies.

Overall, I think this is a very touching and powerful movie. People could really learn from this film. Great director, great story line, great script and awesome actors.
