Movie Review : Slumdog Millionaire

Today, I watched a movie called Slumdog Millionaire in room number 310. Not only me, but other students who take Academic English class also watched this movie. Slumdog Millionaire is set and filmed in India. The story is about a man who participates on a game show. The movie is using flash-forward plot.

Jamal Malik is young man from the slums of Mumbai. He is participating on Who Wants to be a Millionaire and luckily he has made it to the final question. Unfortunately, the police are accusing him of cheating because Jamal is the only person who can answer until the last question. Actually, he could guess all of the answer because the questions are related to his childhood. While he is being interrogated, there are some flashbacks about Jamal’s miserable childhood.

Jamal and his brother, Salim, live in a slum of Mumbai. Their mother dead because there was an attack from people whose religion is different. Jamal and Salim have to survive from the hell of India. In their journey, Jamal and Salim are accompanied by a beautiful girl name Latika. First they met Maman, a gangster who uses children to earn money. After they escape from Maman (without Latika), Jamal and Salim start earning money by stealing food in a train, selling goods, become a tour guide in Taj Mahal, and etc. Until finally they grow up and become an adult. They have a different job. Salim, who is brave and harsh, become a pupil of Jave (a mafia). On the other side, Jamal, who is calm and considerate, become a waiter at call center.

Actually there are two themes on this movie. The first one is about Jamal efforts to find his love, Latika. Even though they are separated, but they still can meet each other. The movie told that you won’t lose your true love if you put all of your desire and effort in it. The other theme that the director wants to tell in Slumdog Millionaire is about life in India. In India, most of the people live in poverty. Because of the poverty problem, the children can’t get a well education. At young age, some of children don’t go to school, but they become a beggar. Another thing that we can conclude from the movie is there are still many slums area in India. Other problem that we can see from the movie is most of the gangsters can conquer all of they want. The India Government should solve all of these problems.

In my opinion, the movie is very interesting especially the scene where Jamal guess the last question. It makes the audience become curious. What make Slumdog Millionaire different with other movie is because it is served with flash-forward plot. The flash-forward idea is amazed me. The best thing in this movie, it gives you a lot of information about how hard live in India. Last but not least, this is a very good and interesting movie.
